I fell in love with Garfield when I was about 6 years old and my older brother gave me a Garfield plush toy for Christmas. Garfield went everywhere with me after that and then I developed an interest in comics and Garfield was the one that I read over and over. Trying to remember what drew me to him I think it was the fact he was big and orange and funny with his sarcastic sense of humour. Funnily enough, when I moved in with Rhys he already had a big orange cat that likes to eat too much and many people say remind them of Garfield! He would no doubt eat as much lasagne as he could and will eat pretty much anything, including things he is not meant to. I once caught him jumping up on the table to eat my garlic bread.
The range of Garfield collectables out there is amazing and the fact it combines humour with colour attracts many people. Jim Davis created this character in the late 70s and the comic strip was in over 2,500 newspapers and journals at that time. Some say the reason his character is timeless is the simplicity of the comics that span any time period as politics or current events are never highlighted in them. Still to this day they sell up to one BILLION dollars worth of merchandise featuring him annually. He is found on all kinds of items and even has his own visa card ( 2.5 million of these are in use in China!) as well as a Garfield convention being held every year in the USA. Tv shows, movies and books are some of the most recognisable ways of knowing Garfield.
Many of the fun treasures you will find of him are from the 80s and I have found some adorable items to share with you.
Garfield is on many different homewares with mugs and glasses being some of the most popular, there are literally thousands of different designs and themes!
